In this short clip that was extracted out of Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 episode 19, we as the audience are introduced to a scene involving the themes of teamwork, loyalty and trust. All these themes are shown together within the camera work, sounds, editing and the mise-en-scene. This clip reveals to us the amount of emotions and reactions the loyalty from the female nurses, doctors and surgeons are showing. Emotions like sadness and relief for example, are created within the scene as well as to the audience watching. Different camera angles, and the one song mentioned, are collaborated together with the editing and mise-en-scene to create what sectors of society are existing nowadays within the female community, as well as the meaning behind them.
As we begin to watch the starting point of this scene from Grey’s Anatomy, we see that there is a male doctor standing guard at one of the entry doors. He shows to allow a female nurse into the next section of the hospital, but not the male doctor that is closely followed behind the female nurse that was allowed through. We notice a steadicam movement of a mid shot showing this happen. The male doctor guarding the doors does not let the other male doctor go through, but lets two female nurses. The mid shot allows the audience to see this happen within only just a mid angled camera shot, not too high or too low either, just right in the middle. This allows the audience to see the respect the male doctor guarding the door has for the older male doctor when not allowing him to walk through, who also looks as if he is more of a “higher” doctor than him in the chain of doctors in a hospital.
Shortly after this encounter of the two male doctors, the audience is then entered into the hallway behind the closed doors. We notice here again that a steadicam was used for its movement when showing what was going on on the other side of the doors. The cameras show the first sense of teamwork during this moment from the female nurses and doctors that are slowly showcased. This allows the audience to create a sense of meaning for this aspect of one of the sectors in today’s society with women. When two of the female doctors are confused as to why they were called into that specific hallway, the camera angles like a master shot captures the facial expressions of the women when they are told that they are there in need of a patient’s help. As the scene begins to unravel itself with the story behind it, the camera is motioned into the current moment in a pan movement. This is where all the female nurses shown are there in the patient’s aid, standing all in a line on the sides of the hallway, making a sort of entrance way towards the elevator for the patient. Here we can see the teamwork theme and loyalty start to kick in, this is another visual of how loyal females can be for one another in times of trouble or aid. This moment in the scene continues to show the sectors of loyalty within the society of our women.
Whilst the camera work is progressing from the pan movement into a new shot, the patient’s point of view, this allows us as the audience to gather more information on what is going on through the patient’s point of view. The camera is used in a way that it shows the patient’s point of view from her eyes, acting as if the camera is in her eyes in a way. This helps capture the visual aspect of the patient and how she is doing. Showing the first appearance of her point of view, we can tell that the view was shot at quite a low angle looking up towards the nurse nearby. This tells the audience that the patient is in fact lying down and not sitting up on her hospital bed. From this, we can also identify how badly injured or sick the patient is. Now knowing that she is looking up towards the nurse from a very low angle, we know that she is either too hurt or sore to even sit up in her bed while getting pushed by other nurses, surgeons and doctors. Here again, this moment of the patient’s point of view matches what happened to the patient. We can tell that she is lying down in a low position, meaning that the camera showing her point of view is slowly revealing what is wrong with her and why the nurses are standing in two welcoming lines down the hallway.
Once the camera is then switched from the patient’s point of view and showing the patient herself, we are then found to be seeing the patient’s full reaction on seeing what the hospital’s female nurses, doctors, surgeons and police officers have done for her sake. The patient is shocked when she sees what the women staff have done for her honour. Her facial expressions show a lot of emotions. Emotions such as relief, just by seeing what the female nurses and doctors, etc, have put together for her.
Right at this very moment when the camera switches from showing the patient’s facial reaction to what she is seeing, the music is then introduced into the scene. This song demonstrates the tough experience the patient has recently gone through, and the loneliness she has currently been feeling. Through this song, it shows to us as the audience more of the aspect of all the female staff’s intentions of wanting to help the patient feel more safe and comfortable. Once we see the long hallway of women workers, standing side by side, waiting for their patient to be shown down their entrance into the elevator, the song is then played, silencing everything in the background. Every non-diegetic sound and diegetic sound is drowned out by the music playing during this scene.
The song used in this scene successfully matches the atmosphere and aroma surrounding the hallway of women. Even though the song sounds sad, it really displays it’s positive side through being played while the camera work shows the audience a very slow track movement showing the whole of the hallway entrance to the elevator from the patient’s view.
Only a little dialogue is mentioned throughout this whole scene. The music starts to die down a bit when the patient has arrived into the operation room. She is lifted onto the operation table, and the nurse that was standing right beside her, holding her hand said “I’m staying right here”. This is yet another point of when the sector of loyalty is being vividly shown in this scene. The words “I’m staying right here” describes so much of the loyalty these women staff have for their female patient who has gone through a lot of trouble and tough moments prior to this moment. They both exchange each other a peaceful, loving look and that is when we as the audience knows that the patient is now feeling her most safe and sound.
Through this whole clip shown, we see the lighting demonstrated in this scene shows that it is daylight. It also visuals the positivity the females wanted to create in the atmosphere before sending the patient into her operation. We are educated in the ways of the different sectors of society that are being conveyed towards all women. The aspects of the female staff in that hospital show how trustworthy and loyal their teamwork can bring them. They all successfully and rightfully made the patient feel less stressed and worried about herself when they all stood side by side with her when making their way to the elevator. The society of women are really portrayed as very loyal and very caring women in this scene, they created a whole mix of different emotions coming from the audience themselves as well as some of the actors and actresses.
