Ownership essay

To what extent does Media Ownership impact the success of a film

The type of extent some industries go through to create a successful impact with their film can be quite big of a deal. We know that the ‘Big 5’ consists of Universal Studios, Paramount pictures, Walt Disney studios, and Colombia Pictures. Film distribution is a part of Ownership especially when it comes to big conglomerates like Disney. Film distribution is the commercial process that makes a feature film available to the general public. Also includes a determination of marketing strategies. We know that some strategies have changed over the years due to the advanced and developed technology that has been introduced into the media film industry. Movies have been able to be released at homes instead of just the cinemas. DVDs/video on demand have been introduced as well. All these new adjustments have brought the whole marketing and distribution sector to be much easier now.

Another sector that takes a big part of Ownership is Piracy. Why did Piracy fail? We know that a lot of the travel films are pirated a couple times after being released. Movies and TV shows can be pirated literally, hours after being released on air. A lot of the public have faced hard times having to watch pirated content. A common issue that pops up occasionally when watching or downloading pirated content is viruses and dependence on other seeders. An example of how Ownership collides with Piracy is when Netflix had paid $100 million to keep exclusive rights over the very famous tv show ‘Friends’.

From the ‘Big 5’ we know the famous film studio, Walt Disney. Back in 2019, worldwide news spread across fast about Disney purchasing Fox which made their company even more bigger altogether as one of the largest conglomerate industries. This is a great example of how a lot of big film industries take in smaller businesses as their subsidiaries. Companies like Disney are called Conglomerates.

Another sector which relates to Ownership is the whole view of Ancillary rights with films. Ancillary rights are where movies nowadays are found, literally everywhere. Ancillary rights and revenue get hammered out in initial deals between distributors and filmmakers.

With Film distribution under Ownership, there are multiple different ways that a film industry can distribute their film outwards to the public, choosing whether or not it’ll be posted to a small crowd of public or a larger crowd. Ways to distribute films from large industries and conglomerates can be Pre-Studio era film release, Standard release, Simultaneous release, Straight-to-video release, and internet release. All five of these different ways are used quite often by a lot of big film companies and small companies.

In conclusion, Ownership becomes a big impact on how successful companies plan to be when distributing their work, etc. Ownership can be challenging for all kinds of film companies, especially the new small ones that are just starting their film journey.
