Bourne Identity essay

This short extract taken out from the Bourne Identity, uses a variety of different media techniques such as Camera, Editing, Sound and Mise-en-scene to create meaning for the film.

We see a variety of examples that show us meaning from the score of this extract. We notice the score that is being used in the beginning when Jason Bourne is walking off the dock gives us, the audience, a sense of curiosity just from listening to it. The echoey instrumental is soft, yet strong as well. Giving the beginning of this extract a perception that something bad is near happening. A non-diegetic sound of foreboding.

Continuing on from the non-diegetic sound of foreboding, the Mise-en-scene in this extract also shows us more of the same meaning. For example, the stormy, cloudy weather that is portrayed in this scene links to the symbolism of foreboding from the audio being used. The wet stormy weather allows the audience to gather more clues and hints of how soon the 'bad thing' is going to happen.

The Mise-en-scene that is shown when Jason is looking into his reflection on the train window, shows the audience how he is still unsure about who he really is. Adds a good sense of suspense, especially right when the score music is playing. The lost and confused look that is given on his face tells a story of vulnerability. We sense more of the mise-en-scene when we see him wearing a red jacket. This red jacket in a way, symbolises the present becoming of his ‘new self’. Not knowing what or who he is, but the red jacket symbolises, yet again, his vulnerability of not knowing who he really is or who he is currently becoming.

The winter weather being shown in this extract from the film symbolises ‘death’, which refers back to how Jason Bourne had a near death experience and was mysteriously healed and brought back to life without him knowing. Also linking back to how his red jacket symbolises his time of coming back to life and not knowing what had happened to him. Sort of, in a way, a resurrection, as some people may call it. Suggests to the audience themes of rebirth and ‘new life’.

The editing from this short extract also helped create suspense throughout the whole film. For example, the blue lighting which is a part of mise-en-scene, shows the audience an example of adding more suspense feelings for the audience. Also allowing a hint of symbolism towards his ‘past life’ of being a blur for him.

Also another example of the significant mise-en-scene in this short extract is when the low lighting and the dark shadows in the scene of when the police officers find Jason sleeping on a public seat in a park. The darkness in that scene represents how he's feeling about not knowing what happened to him or why he is ‘homeless’ at that point.

The low lighting is a symbol of the confusion he is going through at that moment. Since it’s set at night, the use of shadows and natural night light is being used.

The handheld camera action that is being used for the part where Jason is walking off the dock and into the town puts us into the action of the scene, with the way the camera is following Jason roughly but clearly. It is disorienting, which also adds another example to the symbolism of foreboding as the camera does not continue to follow Jason from when he walks off. The camera stays behind and shows the audience first, the location and second, which direction he's walking towards.

The disorienting causes a loss of direction from where Jason is to where he's heading off to. Which again, creates more suspense for the audience when they watch and feel the emotions that this short extract was creating for them.

The editing of the quick cuts and short takes from the fighting scene is also significant to the short extract from the movie/film. The quick, slick movements being used to follow every step of the fight between Jason Bourne and two police officers is conveyed to the audience as more suspense is being created for that suspenseful feeling the audience should be approaching while watching the fight scene.

The camera angles like low angle and close-ups were used to build more suspension and are also linked back to the symbolism of foreboding.

The use of the audio that was played during the fight was quiet and soft.

But, played alongside with that audio also adding in diegetic sound with the sound effects of the punching, kicking and groaning from the fight. This then added a sense of anticipation and an ‘edge-of-seat’ type of feeling for the audience.

In conclusion, this short extract that was extracted from the Bourne Identity film does show a variety of different scenes which portrays the 4 media techniques and their aspects in the film.
